Bach’s Novi Sad path

STEP 3

Bach’s “St Matthew Passion”

It is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of classical sacred music. It was first performed in 1727 at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach was the organist.
The theme of the PASSION is the Passion of Jesus Christ. Bach used the text of the Gospel of Matthew, to which were added original poetic texts, the author of which was his friend Picander.

The Passion thematically covers all events related to the Passion: the Last Supper, Judas’ betrayal, the Arrest, the Mock Trial, the Road to Golgotha, Christ’s Crucifixion, and the Burial.
